Easily one of the most visually stunning boomer shooters you will probably ever find on the market. As is the case with a lot of boomer shooters, Amid Evil doesn't exactly do anything remarkable within the genre, but it does what it is trying to do rather well.

The concept isn't exactly novel anymore but at launch I believe this game was to Hexen/Heretic as Dusk was to Quake in a way. Instead of your traditional FPS locales and weaponry, you're traversing through very beautiful and generally medieval (who could've guessed) landscapes with a magical arsenal. There's a bit more to it than that since each episode is drastically different visually and even introduces new enemies to fit the themes respectively.

As you may expect from a magical arsenal, you get some pretty cool, outlandish concepts for weapons; a wand that fires shrunken-down planets pulled from space and time, or a flail that flings shards of crystals akin to a shotgun. Said weapons can also be buffed for a duration with "Soul Mode" after you acquire enough souls that your fallen foes will provide for you!

The only real issue that I have with the game is that the levels, while gorgeous, usually fall flat in overall design and pacing. They meander for a bit sometimes and almost feel a bit empty at times. The secrets can also be quite mean, ESPECIALLY if you aren't already accustomed to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games in this genre tend to pull for their secrets (and even then I found myself struggling to find many...). Some players may find enemies to be a bit sponge-like as well. Additionally, the "Soul Mode" mechanic I mentioned above just feels kind of awkward to utilize to its fullest and you can easily get through the game's hardest difficulty without even needing it. Ironically it's easy to waste though too, since some encounters may end way sooner than you anticipate.

In short, if you're yearning for a wonderful-looking boomer shooter that scratches that sorta magical Hexen/Heretic vibe with some simple yet fun classic gameplay, I would recommend! I would also consider picking up The Black Labyrinth DLC as well, as it's a fun expansion for the game that even improves upon a lot of issues present in the core game (it's a shame it wasn't as big as it though...)

The visuals are awesome, the gameplay and level design not so much. Worth it if you really want to bunny hop through what looks like late 90s render graphics.
