Engine Mismatch Error When Joining Cipher Servers

The Christmas Zeds have gone home, and with the return of the regular zeds, the game engine has been updated. This will cause problems (temporarily) if you attempt to join the Cipher servers, as their engines have not yet been updated.

Tripwire deliberately updates the engine version every time there's a change (including an event). Your client (that is, your personal copy of the game) is typically forced to update through Steam, ensuring you have the latest version. Dedicated servers, however, do not get this update forced. It's up to the admins who run the servers to update them.

I've posted this announcement so that Reichenstein7 will see it and know that he needs to update Cipher servers. Don't fret, you'll be able to join them again soon enough!

xmodius

Tutorial for fixing Engine Mismatch or File Mismatch Errors
[thejamerson.com]

Merry Christmas!

I realize that for most folks (in the U.S.A. at least), the appropriate thing to say at this time of year is "Happy Holidays." This is done to show tolerance for those who may not celebrate Christmas, but instead Haunakah, Kwanza, or nothing at all.

Well bollocks to that!

Not that I'm crapping on anyone's religion or beliefs, but in less than 1 hour from the time I post this, it will be Christmas Day here where I am. So to everyone who reads this, I am wishing you a Merry Christmas. And if you don't celebrate Christmas, just take this to mean, "I wish you all the best!"

May love and kindness bless you all this day!

Merry Christmas!

xmodius

Killing Floor On Sale - Set your price! Humble Bundle

Humble Bundle does a charity bundle of games each week. Typically for certain games you need to pay the average (which is typically 6 bucks). BUT, Killing Floor is NOT one of those games. You could donate a dollar and you'll get a copy of KF, along with other games bundled in that I don't think are worth a damn (such as Dwarfs!?).

Point is, if you know anyone you want to introduce to KF, this is a damn good time to do it. Its only on for the next 6 days, 20 hours.

https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly?utm_source=Humble+Weekly+Sale+Newsletter&utm_campaign=15cfb0f9d7-HWS_Ace_Atlus_Tripwire12_11_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a406d06e11-15cfb0f9d7-109022321

Enjoy!

Xmo

Servers Back until 2014!!!

Well no sooner did I post that the servers would be down indefinitely, Reichenstein decided to bring them back online. When I asked him why, he only had this to say:

"Happy Holidays"

So for this month, instead of putting up a shit ton of tacky Christmas lights ala National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, he's foregoing the light bill so he can pay the server bill for this month.

Hopefully between now and then he'll have a new sponsor. If not, the servers will likely be down again indefinitely with the start of the new year.

Thank you Reichenstein! And thanks to everyone who showed their apprecation!

Your "Go To Guy",

xmodius

Temporary Hiatus

Hello Fans of Cipher Gaming,

I want to start by saying its been a lot of fun playing with everyone in this group.

Well, okay, everyone that I've actually played with (I don't think I've played with all 500+ members). The game Killing Floor is pretty simple when you get right down to it, and its the conversations, jokes, quips, and other nuances of the online interaction that forged this group. People of a similar mindset who play to have fun and who enjoy playing together. That's Cipher Gaming.

Okay enough of the sappy speech, onto the announcement.

Our founder, Reichenstein, has devoted a lot to this group. He hosted the 12+ KF gaming servers from his house at his own time and expense. This included setting up a redirect server (map downloads), and a separate database server for the storage of player stats (modded servers), which required constant debugging whenever Tripwire updated the code for KF, and a host of other headahces I'm glad I didn't have to deal with personally (but certainly got to hear about).

This announcement is in answer to the overwhelming question I've heard from numerous members: "Where did the Cipher KF gaming servers go?"

The short answer: "They're gone... for now."

The long answer: "Keep reading..."

The Physical Server (PS) that ran the Cipher Gaming KF servers was a computing beast. Like many of the online groups that have multiple KF servers, Reichenstein was able to host these gaming servers because he had sponsors who "rented" the PS for business purpopses. While the PS was hosting KF gaming servers, it was also hosting databases, email, and other business-related services that a company decided to outsource to Reich. This generated additional income for him, which allowed him to pay the rather hefty $300/mo utility bill associated with running this PS.

Have I lost any of you yet? I hope not.

Bottom line. The primary company that rented the PS went under, so Reich no longer has funding.

THIS IS NOT A PLUG FOR DONATIONS! I PROMISE! PLEASE KEEP READING!

As I mentioned earlier, the PS takes $300/mo in electrical costs. Stop and think about that. For those of you who still live at home, I dare you to ask your parents how much their utility bill sets them back. If you pay bills and you're like most people in the world, you know that $300/mo is a lot of money. Most people in the USA have a $300/mo electric bill that size for their entire house, not just for one server.

Obviously, no one could expect to maintain this out of their own pocket who isn't bringing home six figures (and I don't know about you guys, but I sure as hell couldn't swing an extra 300 dollars a month in expenses; I'm a long ways off from making $100,000 a year).

Hpyothetically, through donations it could be possible to keep the Cipher servers up, but I'm not going into that here, because I promised this is not a plug for money.

So why am I telling you all this and not Reichenstein?

Though Reichenstein has made me his admin for Cipher, the guy has a life outside Killing Floor (as do I, despite the thousands of hours I've logged playing). When I asked him about the servers, I told him I voiced this question for everyone in the group who's aked not just about the servers, but our group leader and his general well-being. This surprised him, because he said NO ONE asked him about the servers going down (frankly he felt that most of us didn't care). I'm sure you all agree, that nothing could be further from the truth.

Reich could set up a cheaper rig to bring back some of the KF servers, but he hesitates because he doesn't think enough people care to make it worth his time. We all need to let him know that he's completely wrong! I urge you to light up this comment board with your support for our group and that you would appreciate him doing anything to bring these servers back! Hell, message him personally! Bug the everloving $#!T out of him! Show the love!!

And...

LONG LIVE CIPHER GAMING!!

Hugs 'n Kisses,

xmodius

Cipher Servers Updating

Hello Adoring Fans,

"I the mighty Reichenstein, hath once again cursed the ancestors of Tripwire for updating Killing Floor and making all of Cipher servers display the dreaded KF Mod mismatch error. Fear naught, for I am updating them now and our wonderous realm of zed slaying will be back for all to play and frolic shortly."

Dictated, not read, by the management.

Xmo

SERVERS ARE NOW BACK ONLINE!!
Because I Can

Just had an awesome game with Reichenstein, GoodyGumDrops, monkey_boy, and two new members of Cipher Gaming: Vexy and Richie. We whipped ass on Icebreaker HoE, and while Patty did hand my ass to me during the last wave, the rest of the team came through, tied an anchor to his hippy hair, and tossed him off the ship!

You're all awesome! So much in fact, I found a card that describes it perfectly.

http://theoatmeal.com/horrible4

The top card about a dragon best conveys my feelings, but do read the rest. They're quite the giggle.

Happy Dragon Balls!

Xmo
