Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of those rare games that lingers in your thoughts long after you put the controller down.

From the very beginning, the story establishes itself as something truly special. It pulls you in immediately, yet it’s incredibly difficult to explain why it works so well without drifting into spoiler territory. The narrative feels layered, deliberate, and emotionally resonant—carefully considered rather than manufactured. Even now, while still playing through it, I can already tell this is the kind of story that would feel entirely different on a second playthrough, experienced again with full knowledge of what unfolds later.

At the time of writing, I haven’t completed the full story yet. I’m currently in Act 3, and I plan to update this review once I reach the end. That said, what the game has accomplished so far is already more than enough to leave a strong impression.

What makes this experience stand out even more for me personally is that I almost never finish single-player, story-driven games. Over the years, I’ve bought many of them with the intention of completing them, but very few manage to hold my attention all the way through. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has done exactly that so far, keeping me engaged in a way that feels effortless rather than forced.

The combat was another unexpected highlight. Turn-based systems are usually not my preferred style, and I often struggle to stay invested in games built around them—Baldur’s Gate 3 being a good example. Here, however, the combat feels well-balanced and thoughtfully designed. It rarely gets in the way of the experience, even if some fights can feel a bit repetitive or slightly tedious at times. Thankfully, those moments are brief and don’t meaningfully disrupt the pacing, especially given the freedom to adjust difficulty or invest time into building strong setups.

I chose the latter approach. I played on the hardest difficulty, using carefully thought-out builds. That said, I would strongly advise against searching too much about the game online beyond basic beginner guides. Spoilers are incredibly easy to stumble upon, and if avoiding them means lowering the difficulty, that’s a trade-off well worth making.

The one thing I genuinely wish I had known before starting is that some weapons are missable—or at least far more difficult to obtain later on. For those who want to be informed, I’ve included the exact detail below. I don’t personally consider it a spoiler, but I completely understand wanting to go in blind.

Maelles absolute best weapon is the Medalum which is obtained in two ways where one way is easy while the other is a lot harder and will make it unobtainable until a lot later in the game. The easy way to get the weapon is by winning as Maelle in the fight against the stranger in the gestral Arena tournament.

One thing the game does exceptionally well is respecting the player’s time. Very little feels like filler or busywork. Progression feels purposeful, and there’s a strong sense that everything exists for a reason, which helps maintain a steady and enjoyable rhythm throughout. While the two Axon fights can feel a bit unnecessary, they add flavor to the world and ultimately become a memorable figures—something I wouldn’t want removed.

The music is outstanding. At one point, I realized I had already liked and listened to Lumiere quite a bit on Spotify long before playing the game, without even knowing it was from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Hearing it in context only made it more impactful, and the soundtrack as a whole does an excellent job of reinforcing both the atmosphere and the emotional weight of the story.

Overall, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 feels less like a product designed to meet expectations and more like a tool the developers used to tell a story they genuinely wanted to share. Unlike many modern triple-A titles that often feel built primarily to generate revenue and only then wrap a story around the mechanics, this game feels sincere, focused, and deeply personal. Even before reaching the end, it has already left a lasting impression—and I’m very much looking forward to updating this review once the journey is complete.

Im afraid of roosters but not robots

Edit:
Great game but the loop of entertainment can be a bit repetative. I hope the devs dare to add something completely different in the end game to keep us motivated to play.

Very good game. I killed a dragon, became a thane got an assistant from the Jarl.

I tried to break someone out of prison and while I was talking to the jailed person my assistant walked through the wall and sat down on the bed inside the locked cell, amazingly immersive.

On a real note, modders make this game extremely enjoyable with better perks, graphics, spells, combat and expanded storylines. Would recommend now more than ever.
