This space is devoted to the preservation and study of the languages, traditions, and mythologies of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Language is not only a means of communication, but also a living form of memory, one that our ancestors spoke, created, and preserved for thousands of years.

Languages, songs, legends, and images of the world hold a special value. The Kalevala, the Kalevipoeg, Bjarmia, Karelia, Ingria, Finno-Ugric identity, and the history of our peoples — all of this forms a single cultural space that we seek to preserve, reflect upon, and pass on.

We honor those who preserved the word, defended their home, affirmed their cultural form, and did not allow memory to dissolve with time. We see in the northern heritage not the past, but a living foundation for the future.

The Finno-Ugric world is not only history, but also the present; not only myth, but also destiny. This space is open to all who value this heritage, share its importance, and want to be part of its continuation.

Fornjot

According to the saga, the oldest king of Finland was Fornjot, whose name meant ancient giant. Without further ado, we could assume that this was a person of exceptionally large physical size.

I will begin to decipher the meaning of the name Fornjot, starting with its prefix. The words manassa and menneinnis are very close to each other in meaning, in addition to their appearance.

Mana is something that is gone. One meaning of Manala is the past, antiquity. It is generally the abode of everything that is gone, such as ancestors.

Fronjot to Manalajätti and I will also present the reasons for this translation later. Fornjot and Kaleva should not and cannot be separated from each other. Fornjot and Kaleva are one and the same character widely known under different names.

The sons of Kaleva were the sons of an ancient giant. Stories about ancient giants appear in the traditions of many tribes, but the concept of an ancient giant is also found in the Bible, or more precisely, in Jewish tradition.

This is perhaps the easiest way to solve the riddle of the giants. The biblical Rephaim are known in Jewish tradition as the ancient remnant or ancient ancestors in Hades. Thus, in Jewish myth, the ancestors of the Rephaim are associated with the fallen angels who rebelled in the Bible, the "sons of God," who fathered human offspring in the form of giants.

The Bible mentions giant-sized peoples, including the aforementioned Rephaim, the Anakim descended from Arba, whose physical size was greatly exaggerated by the spies sent by Joshua, among others, and the giants descended from the Gathite Rapha, whom David and his troops killed.

The ancestor of all these giants is written without vowels RB, which can be vocalized and pronounced, among others, in the forms Arba, Refa or Rafa. The English King James translation directly translates Raafa of Gath as a giant of Gath. The Finnish translation of the Bible of 1776 calls the Rephaim the sons of Kaleva, but so does the translation that follows it. The sons of Kaleva as sons of a giant have therefore been a fairly clear concept for Finns, because it is also printed in the Bible.
