Goth Is Dead, Long Live Goth

Gothic music is a style of music originating from post punk and having dark, dim or haunting tones, sounds, imagery, and usually dark or morbid lyrics. It tends to be used in many genres such as rock, punk, alternative, darkwave, ambient, industrial, ebm and metal.

Gothic rock is a style of rock that emerged from post punk in the late 1970s. Proto-gothic rock bands grew from the strong ties they had to the English punk rock and emerging post punk scenes. Such bands include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk due to its darker music accompanied by introspective and romantic lyrics. Gothic rock then gave rise to a broader subculture that included clubs, fashion and publications in the 1980s. Bands were on the rise like Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim and The Sisters of Mercy.

Gothic rock typically deals with dark themes addressed through lyrics and the music's atmosphere. The poetic sensibilities of the genre led gothic rock lyrics to exhibit literary romanticism, morbidity, existentialism, religious symbolism or supernatural mysticism. Musicians who initially shaped the aesthetics and musical conventions of gothic rock include Marc Bolan, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols. Journalist Kurt Loder would write that the song "All Tomorrow’s Parties" by the Velvet Underground is a "mesmerizing gothic-rock masterpiece". However, Reynolds considers Alice Cooper as "the true ungodly godfather of goth" due to his "theatrics and black humor".

Gothic metal is a fusion genre combining the heaviness of heavy metal with the dark atmospheres of gothic rock. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. The genre originated during the early 1990s in Europe originally as an outgrowth of death-doom, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. Lyrics are generally dark and introspective with inspiration from gothic fiction as well as personal experiences. Pioneers of gothic metal include Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema to name a few. The genre has even spread to the now extreme gothic metal genre like Cradle of Filth.
